3 Tips for Extending the Life of Your Air-Conditioning Unit

Posted on

In order to extend the life of your air-conditioning unit, you can do certain things. This article will discuss three tips for doing just this.

Change the Filter

One of the easiest things that you can do to help extend the life of your air-conditioning unit is to change the filter out regularly. Most air-conditioning filters need to be changed out every 1–2 months in order to ensure that they are cleaning all of the necessary toxins and particles out of your air. If you fail to clean out your filter as often as you need to, this is not only going to mean that the air coming out isn't nearly as clean but also restrict the amount of air that is able to come through, thus reducing the amount of cool air you get.

Check Your Outdoor Unit

While it is easy to think about your indoor air-conditioning unit, you may neglect or forget about your outdoor unit altogether. However, it is just as important that you take care of your indoor unit as it is that you take care of your outdoor unit. To do this, you are going to want to check your outdoor unit regularly for visual damage, debris, or things such as smoking or sparking. If you do find any damage, it is crucial that you contact an HVAC contractor right away to come and repair your system. A great way to try to protect your outdoor unit can include having it installed in the shade initially or planting shrubs or trees around the unit to provide both protection from the elements as well as shade.

Have It Professionally Maintained

There are multiple HVAC contractors out there whose job it is to perform maintenance and repairs on air-conditioning units. While there are definitely things that you can do on your own to cut costs and help keep your air conditioner functioning as it should, you obviously don't have the knowledge or experience to check everything and perform all types of maintenance. An HVAC contractor is going to be able to inspect multiple things and perform any needed maintenance or repairs. This includes cleaning out all of the ducts, replacing a broken motor or fan, or doing whatever else needs to be taken care of. Having your air-conditioning unit looked at once or twice per year is a great idea and is going to be well worth the cost.
